Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles issued cease and desist orders today to Uber and Lyft, telling the unlicensed transportation companies they must stop operating in violation of state law or face fines against their drivers.
This isn’t the first time Uber and Lyft have received this type of order. In April, Virginia already issued civil penalties against the companies that totaled $26,000 for Uber and $9,000 for Lyft. The fines were from trips that their drivers provided in Virginia despite previous warnings by the state agency.
Along with the cease and desist orders, the DMV is also circulating a warning that advises the public to research any ride service and learn about it’s insurance, vehicle maintenance and background checks prior to using it.
“I urge the citizens of Virginia to protect their families by using only companies that appear on DMV’s website as licensed transportation services. If it’s not on the list, it’s not recommended,” said DMV Commissioner Richard Holcomb.
Side note: Uber and Lyft are not on this approved list. What a shocker
